How common are gambling problems?

Gambling is something most people do without harm, and it helps to keep the scale in perspective. In Great Britain, official statistics show that the large majority of adults report no signs of gambling harm — but a real minority experience moderate risk or problem gambling, and they deserve straightforward help. If any of this sounds like you or someone close to you, that is reason enough to reach out.

Common questions

Where can I get help with gambling right now?
Free, confidential helplines are available in most countries, many of them 24 hours a day. In the UK you can call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133. Our help by country page lists the right number and service for where you live.
Is getting help free?
Yes. National helplines, self-exclusion registers such as GAMSTOP and free blockers such as BetBlocker cost nothing to use. Some blocking apps are paid, but free options exist everywhere.
Can I stop myself gambling online in one step?
Often, yes. A national self-exclusion register blocks every licensed online operator in your country with a single sign-up. Pairing that with a device blocker and a bank gambling block closes the most common gaps.
Will anyone find out I asked for help?
Support is confidential. Helplines and registers do not share that you have contacted them, and you can use most services anonymously.
